September was as usual a turgid month on the local fishing scene. Dolphin fishing was poor, bottom fishing was successful for those who traveled to the Bahamas. The swordfish ran hot and cold and sail fishing was a month away. Many captains and local anglers chose to watch football in the cool comfort of their homes rather than swelter on the water in the late summer heat. Great numbers of anglers and pros such as Captain John Dudas, Neal Orange, Albert Hernandez, Ray Rosher and Crook and Crook’s Jack of Loxely decided to don their camo and took bows and arrows into the woods in search of game. Late October will bring cooler weather and improved fishing.
Mike Poller of the advertising Pollers reports his dad Bob Aka Woody [Bob is sort of a Woody Allen clone] trekked up to St. Lucie Inlet and captured a feisty sailfish. Both Pollers are veteran anglers in the area with expertise in back country and blue water fishing.
Captain Brett Dudas guided son Jake to an outstanding catch the other evening. The duo was fishing from dad’s 25 foot Sea Vee Jumpin’ Juniper. Jake caught a potential small fry IGFA World record 132 pound swordfish. Ten year old Jake was breaking in his brand new Leeward rod during the one hour and twenty minute battle. The young man, a student a Harbordale Elementary School, is a promising baseball player like his pop, a former high school pitcher known as the Ice Man. Captain Brett and brother John Louie are members of Warren Sand’s successful Wound Up Tournament Fishing team. Grand dad John Dudas a former blue water fishing legend is now hunting the elusive peacock bass in the Florida wilds.
The above mentioned Warren Sands has purchased the Bill Back a fifty seven foot Spencer just in time for the upcoming sailfish season. He will name the new vessel Wound Up. Don’t worry the sagacious Warren is not punching a one way ticket to Devaneyville, he is selling his old Wound Up, a tournament proven fish catching fifty foot Viking.
Captain Bart Sherwood sailed down to the Florida Keys on the Jarrett Bay Clueless with owner Don Barnes his buddy Jim Vernor and the usual cast of suspects except for truck tycoon Joe De Maria who was busy prepping his seventy something foot palatial yacht for an impending sale The group went for some rest and relaxation, serious bottom fishing and to plan for the North Carolina tuna season. Captain Mike Henry rode along and worked the cockpit.
Captain Sherwood returned to Miami at the time of the discovery of the missing Charter boat Joe Kool and offered his services to the anxious family of the missing crew in procuring an air search. Bart, Captain Bouncer Smith and Captain Ray Rosher were all quoted in local newspapers on the tragic affair.
Captain Bill Harrison reports his friend Captain Peter Bristow the Aussie now chartering out of Madeira has come up with an unusual catch. Sandwiched in between his usual seven hundred pounders and granders he captured a rare hatchet marlin. The angler was Ralph Senner of New Orleans. The Crescent city angler is a veteran fisherman who has fished in all the hot spots. They were fishing from Peter’s Katherine B. After this hatchet marlin he might change the name of the boat to the Lizzie B. [like in Borden].

Attorney, tournament fisherman and former master angler in late lamented MET tournament Rick Gunion sent us the picture and the text on the next item.
“Young [3 years old] Gunner Nichols of Atlanta, Georgia recently fished the fertile waters of Key Biscayne with proud grandfather Rick Gunion. This was Gunner’s first fishing trip. Gunner subdued 3 inch breeder pinfish and a gray snapper of approximately ¾ lb. All fish were released to fight another day. Gunner’s first fish can be seen in “his guide’s left hand“.
This lad will likely follow the family tradition and become a master angler and successfully pursue a fishing career for the rest of his life or at least until he discovers the anatomical difference in the genders.
Captain Ray Rosher will take a busman’s holiday and put his local Miss Britt Charter boats on cruise control and jet over to Australia to run Peter Wright’s boat in Cairns. Captain Ray will spend a month in the area pursuing black marlin. Hopefully he will send us a picture of a grander for next month.
Captain Bric Peeples Miami Swordfish Tournament ended two days ago and all we have is a partial results. It is easier to get results from the Nepalese junior soccer league than to find out who won this prestigious event.
The results we have are from the knowledgeable and ubiquitous Ray Rosher. The My C Fins won the event with Captain Andy Towe at the helm, second place went to Miss Britt with Captain Jim Mulcahy running the boat. The angler was Jason Kallivokas from Virginia. This was a fine tournament but I think Peeples and his staff could benefit from taking communications 101 from Tony Albello.
That’s it for this month fans.
As usual, I close with the quote of the month.
With much of the fishing community in the hunting mode
We bring you the sage advice from Crook and Crook’s hunting maven Jack [Loxley] Agramonte which he borrowed from the movie Patriot.
